Areas of The Body Most Vulnerable to EMF Radiation

Whenever you talk on your cell phone for more than a few minutes with the phone up to your ear you more than likely notice its surface gradually growing warmer against your ear?

The warmth you are experiencing is caused by the transfer of radio frequency (RF) energy (a form of electromagnetic field, or EMF radiation emitting from your mobile devices) from your mobile device to your ear.

It has been theorized for years that when tissues get heated by the transfer of EMF radiation that, inevitably, this is what leads to unhealthy changes within our cells (which, in turn, leads to various types of disease).  However, scientists now believe that physiological changes may be induced by levels of EMFs that are well below what it takes to cause any temperature changes to tissue.

Essentially, what this means is that EMF exposure levels that were long considered to be safe, levels that most the population receive on a daily basis, may have a profound effect on our long-term health.

However, EMF radiation has varying effects on different parts of the body does not affect the entire body in the same ways. Specific parts of the body such as the headtorso (heart and breasts etc), and reproductive organs, can be much more susceptible to harm than the limbs.

However, this does not mean that the limbs do not receive harm from EMF exposure.  This just means they receive less damage than the more vital parts of the body.

Lets explore some of the ways that the physical body may react when exposure to EMF radiation from wireless technology, highlighting the parts of body that are most likely to suffer the consequences of close and  consistent proximity to EMF-emitting devices.

1) Heart and Breasts

Women are often faced with the dilemma of going somewhere without a purse and/or not having a place put your phone and it’s quite possible that you’ve resorted to stashing your phone in your bra. While this may seem harmless, it’s not!  Two of the most vulnerable parts of the body are the heart and breasts when it comes to the effects of EMF radiation exposure.

Understanding how EMF radiation may affect the heart first requires a basic understanding of the cardiovascular system. The heart is regulated by a natural “pacemaker” called the SA node that sends electrical impulses throughout the cells of the heart muscle.  This causes the heart to contract at the optimal rate for the body’s oxygen needs at any given moment. This natural pacemaker is controlled by the autonomic nervous system and by the catecholamines  (hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine).

New evolving evidence shows that EMFs can disturb the heart’s delicate electrical system, even at exposure levels considered to be safe by the FCC.

In a recent animal study, adult male rabbits were placed within close proximity to a WiFi antenna for one hour. The exposed rabbits were shown to have an increased heart rate (+22%) and arterial blood pressure (+14%), and there was also an alteration of effectiveness of catecholamines on the heart. The chronic long-term effects of EMF exposure can be for more significant.

According to a 2010 study, it seems that the human cardiovascular system may respond to EMFs in a similar way. Twenty-five subjects were exposed to EMF radiation emitted by a cordless phone over three-minute intervals, and then with a sham exposure. Researchers monitored the subjects’ heart rate variability (HRV) throughout the sessions.

Changes in HRV and the autonomic nervous system were observed in ten of the twenty-five subjects, with some of the more severe responses being rapid heart rate. During the sham exposure, All of the subjects’ physiological responses returned to normal.  The researchers concluded that “this is the first study that documents immediate and dramatic changes in both heart rate and HR variability associated with microwave exposure at levels well below federal guidelines in Canada and the United States.”

While both men and women may potentially experience cardiovascular changes from keeping an EMF emitting source close to their chest, women should also be concerned about possible adverse effects on breast health. Below is a case study of four female subjects with multifocal breast cancer.

These women carried their smartphones in their braziers for up to 10 hours a day over a period of several years. None of the women were found to have had genetic predisposition or any family history of breast cancer. All four women developed cancerous tumors directly beneath the areas where they had the phone against their skin.

Although there have not been a great deal of studies reflecting on EMF exposure and the chest/heart, it would probably be best to err on the side of caution and keep any wireless devices away from these sensitive areas.

2) Reproductive Organs and Fertility

A number of studies have shown that EMFs have varying degrees of negative effects on the reproductive systems of animals, and many of these findings are similar in human subjects as well.  This is because human body’s reproductive organs are regulated by the nervous and endocrine systems, which are both highly sensitive to environmental toxins such as EMFs.

This review of findings shows the connection between EMF exposure and problems with fertility and pregnancy and gives a basic overview of research done in the past couple of decades. Below are just a few examples of many that were referenced:

“A 2015 study showed that exposure to 2.4 GHz WiFi decreased sperm function. The researchers concluded that “there should be major concern regarding the exposure to WiFi networks existing in the vicinity of our living places.”

“In rabbits, a 50 Hz of super low frequency EMFs can cause changes in sperm’s motility and reduce their viability. This process takes place by interfering with the intracellular calcium homeostasis, resulting in disability in sperm function.

Spontaneous abortion and fetal abnormalities are two interrelated issues that have attracted the attention of many researchers. Clinical studies on pregnant women exposed to Video Display Terminal (VDT) have indicated a significant increase in spontaneous abortions.

“This study suggested that exposure to EMFs in the implantation period can have deleterious effects on the development of embryos. Radiation for 4 hours before ovulation showed that SLF-EMFs have negative effects on the early development of the embryo.

If you’re planning to have children in the near future, you should be taking this very seriously. 3) Neurotoxicity and The Brain

Making calls the traditional way, our phone is positioned only a small distance from our brain.

The fact that very little research has been done on how EMF’s affect this vital part of the human body (and cell phone companies provide virtually no information about limiting use of our phones in this way) seems negligent.

Studies to date suggest that EMF emissions cause numerous physiological changes within the brain.

A 2011 study utilized PET scans to measure glucose metabolism in the brain on subjects who had a cell phone placed next to their ear while the phone was either on or off for fifty minute timed sessions. On the side where the phone was placed, the findings showed that the glucose metabolism in the brain was significantly higher when the phone was on.

Glucose in the brain is primarily used to perform essential tasks like synthesizing neurotransmitters and ATP.  Changes in glucose metabolism may be involved with the development of neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s disease so glucose metabolism must be carefully regulated.

According to an animal study done in 2015, EMFs may also have damaging effects on RNA found in brain tissue. In this study, two divided groups of 16 rats were used.  The first group was exposed to 2.4 Ghz WiFi 24 hours a day for an entire year, while the second group was only given a sham exposure.

After 12 months, researchers compared the brains of the two groups and found that rats in the exposure group had alterations in miRNA expression. MiRNA (short for micro RNA) help to regulate gene expression as well as cell growth and death; researchers say that changes in miRNA expression may play a role in the development of neurological disease.

The researchers mention that “significant effects on microRNAs observed in this study were found from WiFi exposure that was well below the legal limit. The limit for the general population for whole-body exposure by the FCC is 0.08 watts/kilogram. The average whole body exposure in this study was 0.0001414 watts/kilogram, and the peak exposure was 0.007127 watts/kilogram.” More extensive studies would have to be done to know exactly how this translates to the human body, but this study does fare well for wifi being harmless.

Another study of 60 medical students researched the connection between frequent close proximately use of mobile phones near the head and showed changes in the hippocampus, the brain’s memory center. The students were divided into low use and high use groups (less than or more than 30 minutes of daily use by the head). While no physical differences were detected in the MRI scans of the ‘more than 30 minute’ group, there was a significantly lower performance rate in neuropsychological tests, implying that frequently using a cell phone close to the head can result in problems with concentration and memory.

More research is necessary for us to fully understand the influence of EMFs on the brain and long-term exposure. However, with the signs pointing to potential neurological harm, it’s probably a good idea to avoid making phone calls with your phone in close proximity to your ear whenever possible.

The Good News

This suggests that our hands, arms, and legs can be exposed to twice the amount of EMF as our head and torso while still remaining within the accepted safe levels of absorption.

Reducing Risk of EMF Exposure on Biological Systems

  1. Avoid the use of laptops on your lap, as this is just inches from your reproductive organs. When working on a laptop, use a table or desk, and maintain a distance of at least 12 inches between your body and the laptop.
